Billow started with a vintage puffy jacket and the question it raised: could a hard material behave like a soft one? Wearstler became fascinated by the contradiction: ceramic that looks soft and responsive, as if it might give under a hand. The rounded forms play with light and shadow, taking a rigid material somewhere unexpected.

Creative Process

Getting there meant handing off control at exactly the right moment. Wearstler and MADE's artisans built the pillowed, fluted surface first, then let the reactive glaze do whatever it wanted to do across it — pooling thick in the valleys, thinning to nothing over the peaks, breaking through to raw clay wherever it pleased. That variation is left exactly as it lands. MADE's practice, refined over three decades in Portland, is built around guiding the material: precision in the form, freedom in the finish, and no two tiles quite alike.

Creative Direction

The campaign was shot in two places. Staged installations show what the tile becomes on a wall, with glaze collecting thick in the valleys, light skimming the fluted ridges, and the surface shifting as you move. The Portland workshop makes up the second half, with Kelly photographed there among the raw material. Together they tell the whole story: the workshop where it is made, and the wall where it lands.

MADE doesn't try to make everything perfect and uniform — they understand that the irregularities are where the soul lives. It's this beautiful dance between control and surrender.
